5 Tips on How to Beat Your Poker Home Game
Playing poker at home with friends can be a lot of fun, but it can also be super competitive. If you want to come out on top, you need more than just a bit of luck. Here are my top five tips that can help you dominate your next home game. From reading physical and betting tells to managing your patience and emotions, these strategies will give you the edge you need to consistently win.
Let’s get started!

Tip #1: Be aware of physical tells.
Everything you do at the poker table gives off information. It’s important to observe your opponents mannerisms and reactions when you’re in a hand with them.
For example if your opponent has a strong hand that they like, they may sit up straighter in their chair, they may lick their lips, they may look at their chips which is a subconscious reaction when you’re preparing to put out a bet.
On the other hand, if your opponent has a weak hand or is bluffing, they may slouch down in their chair, start breathing heavily, become really still, and so on.
Tip #2: Watch out for these bet sizing tells.
Inexperienced players will often give tells with the way they bet their hands. I’ve noticed that a lot of players will choose a really large bet sizing when they have a very strong hand that they want to win money with.
I’ve also noticed that people will sometimes bet really small when they have a weak hand because they don’t want to invest anymore money in the pot.
Tip #3: Have patience.
Poker requires an insane amount of patience. I know poker is shown on TV but I always say that it’s not a spectator sport.
The majority of the time you’re going to be folding your cards. You’re going to be dealt a lot of bad cards and it can be very tempting to put in a bet with weak hands, but you have to fight this urge and stay patient.
Now I’m not saying you should sit around and wait for aces every hand, but have patience and pick good spots to pick up chips.
Tip #4: Be okay with losing.
You have to be okay with losing if you’re going to play poker. Losing is inevitable in poker. Downswings are inevitable. You can be the best poker player in the world and lose 5 games in a row.
No matter how you slice it, there is an element of luck in the game. Poker players call this variance. You have to accept the variance in the game and continue to play. When I go into work, I know that I’m going to lose sometimes.
Tip #5: Control your emotions.
Your emotions are what can make or break you in poker. Like I said, losing is inevitable. You’re going to lose pots where you have the best hand.
The biggest bad beat I ever had was in the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open $5,000 Main Event. First place was $1,000,000 and there were some 15 of us left. I wound up getting in AA to AA to KQs all in preflop and lost to the KQ, knocking me out in 14th place.
As a professional, I have learned to brush it off and move on. There are always more tournaments. Even if you’re the best poker player in the world, if you can’t control your emotions you will never win. Because what happens if you get upset over a hand you lost, you’ll start playing very poorly. You may bluff more, you may make bad calls, and this can really hurt your game.
So controlling your emotions is definitely one of the most important tools in poker to be successful!
